Trying Cryotherapy For The First Time: All Your Questions Answered!
Everyone experiences some level of anxiety any time they try something for the first time but especially when they hear they'll be experiencing Subzero temperatures! Let us put your mind at ease – we’ll walk you through the process step by step and talk to you (or dance with you) the whole 3 minutes!
When you arrive at Revitalab we will greet you, give you a quick tour, and check you in. If you didn’t already do so before arriving, we will have you read our waiver and confirm that you don’t have any of the contraindications for using whole body cryotherapy. These include, but are not limited to, cold allergy (Raynaud’s disease), uncontrolled high blood pressure, recent myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, venous thrombosis, uncontrolled seizures, Pregnant, or if you have a cardiac pacemaker.
Next up, we take over to our dressings rooms where you will change into your Cryo gear.
What Do I Wear?
We provide you with socks, gloves, shoes and a robe to wear during your session. Women can be completely naked, leave on their bra & underwear, or wear a bathing suit. We always say the more skin exposure the better but it's totally up to you and what you feel comfortable in. Men must wear, boxers, briefs or shorts... you know, to protect "The Jewels". No metal or jewelry from the neck down. Additionally, we ask that you don't wear any oils, lotions or perfumes immediately before your session. Don't Worry, No one will see you naked. You go into the chamber with your robe on and you take it off once your inside and the door is closed.
Is It Cold?
Cryotherapy literally means "cold therapy" so yes, it is cold but it's distinct from stepping outside and getting slapped in the face from in the Chicago Winter. Why? Well, cryotherapy lacks moisture and humidity, it's like dry ice! It's completely tolerable, uncomfortable sure, but not painful.
How Long and How Cold Is The Session?
Each session lasts up to 3 minutes with temperatures ranging from -166F to -220F. The cooling agent is Liquid Nitrogen which is converted into gas form once it reaches the cabin. Nitrogen is completely safe but only breathing nitrogen can deplete oxygen and make you dizzy so the elevator in the chamber raises you to a safe level and your head is always above the fog.
What Happens If I Want To Get Out?
The chamber is completely safe but we understand sometimes people get a little claustrophobic in tight spaces. A couple of things to note, 1) Your head is always out of the chamber so you can easily see your surroundings and talk to the cryo-technician the whole time! 2) There is a timer that shuts the machine off after 3 minutes, 3) There is no locking mechanism on the door so if you did decide you wanted to jump out you can just push the door open. You can do anything for 3 minutes!
Lastly, your session ends - YAY! You did it!! We hand you your robe and wait for you to get decent before we open the door to the cryochamber.
How Do I Feel After a Session?
You may experience what we like to call" The Cryo High"! What exactly is this Cryo High you speak of? Part of what cryotherapy does is naturally release and boost all those feel good receptors DOSE (Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins) with the release of these hormones you also feel full of energy, invigorated, and happy... hence the Cryo High. This usually lasts anywhere from 3-8 hours post session. Why such a big gap? Well, everyone is different so results vary. The more treatments you do in close proximity, the longer the DOSE boost lasts. Same can be said with chronic pain. Some clients feel immediate results some may need more sessions. Clients who arrived with aches and pains tell us that they feel some immediate loosening of tight muscles. Other clients tell us they get their best sleep after a cryotherapy session. Remember, every individual experiences cryotherapy differently. #CryoHigh
